A diet low in salt and protein significantly reduces the risk of kidney stones. These are the results of a study in Italy that can destroy the established concept of the exceptional role of the noncalcium diet in the prevention of kidney stones.

About 10% of the US population - while the vast majority of them (about 80%) are men - have urolithiasis. Most stones "go out" on their own, however, in 15% of cases, qualified medical care is required. In most such cases, doctors advise patients to limit calcium intake, based on the fact that most kidney stones are made up of calcium.

However, a recent study completely disproved this theory, suggesting that a diet low in calcium not only does not reduce the risk of stone formation, but sometimes vice versa, it contributes to their appearance, and at the same time it causes the development of osteoporosis.

"A new study destroys the myth that a low-calcium diet is a prevention of the formation of kidney stones," Dr said.. David A. Bushinsky, a specialist in kidney disease, University of Rochester. Moreover, William Keane, president of the National Kidney Foundation, argues that the new diet with salt and protein restriction will soon become the "gold standard".
