A new study shows that oral contraceptives are safe for non-smokers, but may be fatal for women who smoke. The study began 35 years ago and included the monitoring of 17,000 women. Oral contraceptives were widely used in the 1970s and 1980s. For a long time there was the question of whether oral contraceptive use affects the occurrence of cancer and other deadly diseases. Researchers at the Oxford Family Planning Association reviewed deaths related to the use of oral contraceptives and cigarette smoking. There were women aged between 25 and 39 years. They used oral contraceptives, a contraceptive diaphragm or an intrauterine device. Information about women was collected until 2000. By that time, according to 889 researchers, 17,000 women had died. Researchers studied the cause of death and its relationship to used contraceptives.

It turned out that the death rate of women using oral contraceptives, non-smokers, was the same as that of women who did not use them. Even, these indicators for the first group were slightly lower. However, in moderately smoking women, death rates were higher by 25%, and those who smoked 15 cigarettes a day suffer 50%. Basically, the cause of death was heart disease. Thus, this study suggests that smoking and using oral contraceptives can be a deadly combination.
