It turns out that drugs that reduce cholesterol, such as statins and ezetimibe, can fight infectious diseases, including typhoid, chlamydia and malaria. In particular, they reduce the risk of contracting these diseases. It was established by experts from Duke University, writes The Indian Express.

According to the estimates of the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 21 million people worldwide are ill with typhoid fever every year and 222,000 people die from this disease.

The study showed that some people are more likely to become infected with typhoid because of a mutation in the VAC14 gene.

Mutation causes an increase in cholesterol. This, in turn, contributes to the invasion of the bacteria Salmonella Typhi (pathogen of typhoid) into human cells. Also, the researchers found: drugs that reduce cholesterol, protect zebrafish from Salmonella Typhi. According to scientists, further research is needed.
