With intensive laser radiation, over a millionth of a second, American scientists destroy the tiny structures of a living cell without killing it. Thanks to this technique, the work of the cell has been studied, and ultra-precise surgery now seems possible.

The physicist Eric Mather of Harvard University and his colleagues managed to decompose the cell into its components, destroy the single mitochondria (cellular organelle) and intervene in the work of the nerve, without killing the cell. A similar laser technology was called nanosurgery.

"This plan for microscopic work is done with surprising accuracy, as in James Bond," says working group member Donald Ingber, a biologist from Harvard. - The laser generates a temperature close to the temperature of the Sun, for a fraction of a second, and is applied in a confined space ".

Eric Mather unveils the results of a study on cell biology this week at the Frontier in Optics conference, which will be held in Tucson, Arizona.
