The protein involved in the immune response may be a potential marker for identifying women at high risk for miscarriages, as reported by Australian scientists.

Miscarriages occur in about 10-15% of pregnancies, usually in the first 12 weeks. There are no ways to prevent or at least predict a miscarriage.

But researchers at the University of Montesques suspect that a protein called MIC 1 can provide the key to predicting and, perhaps, even preventing miscarriages.

"If a causal link is confirmed between the low MIC 1 and miscarriage, MIC 1 or its synthetic analogue could be used to prevent miscarriages," said Stephen Tong, author of a study published in the medical journal Lancet ".

Stephen Tone and his colleagues noted that MIC 1 levels were almost one third lower in pregnant women who subsequently had a miscarriage compared to women who did not have a miscarriage.

In most cases, a low concentration of protein in blood samples taken at 6-12 weeks of gestation was followed by a miscarriage a few weeks later.

However, according to scientists, additional studies are needed to confirm that MIC 1 is a marker of miscarriage.

In a commentary to the study, Galit Sarig and Benjamin Brenner of the Rambam Medical Center in. Haifa, Israel, said that this protein could be a potential predictor of early miscarriage.

"If the results received by Stephen Tone and his colleagues are confirmed, the road to completely new methods of treatment aimed at preventing the termination of pregnancy will be opened," they add medicus. En.
