The maximum heart rate is used to select the optimal loads in sports training, as well as to assess the response of the cardiovascular system to physical stress in the diagnosis of heart disease.

Previously, women used the formula derived for men. According to her, the maximum heart rate (the highest value of the pulse that can be achieved with a load without a risk to health) is 220 minus the age in years.

Researchers from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, analyzed the results of exercise tests of 5437 healthy women aged 35 years and older who participated in the St study. James Women Take Heart Project.

The study of these data allowed Martha Gulati and colleagues to derive a more accurate formula for the maximum HR for women - it was equal to 206 minus 88 percent of the age.

The results obtained by the researchers will allow to more accurately calculate sports loads and assess the degree of impairment of heart functions in diseases. Depending on the type of training loads, their optimal volume lies in the range of 60 to 85 percent of the maximum heart rate.
