Elderly people taking vitamin supplements containing folic acid, are proven to lose their hearing more slowly.

Folic acid - one of the varieties of B vitamins effectively prevents the development of intrauterine malformations, cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Danish scientists conducted a study involving 728 people aged 50 to 70. Unlike residents of North America, Europeans do not add vitamins to flour for bread baking, so all participants initially took quite a bit of vitamin.

Half of the subjects took a vitamin supplement containing about 800 mg of folic acid, which is twice the amount of vitamin they would receive from standard vitamin preparations.

The other half of participants received inactive "deceptions" instead of the drug.

After 3 years of study, those who took vitamins instead of placebo had much lower levels of hearing loss at low frequencies.

Differences in hearing loss at high frequencies were not observed: the reason could be that: hearing loss at high frequencies begins much earlier than 50 years.

When analyzing the results, the researchers determined that with the use of these vitamin preparations, over the course of 20 years it will be possible to keep hearing within about 5 decibels, which will reduce the need for hearing replacement among 75-year-olds from 33% to 22%.
