In the blood of young women, the level of folic acid - a vitamin from group B. This can lead to an increase in the number of malformations of the fetus and increase the number of miscarriages.

Data on the drop in folic acid levels in the blood of women of childbearing age are derived from a study of 4,500 women aged 15-44 between 1999 and 2004. The work included interrogations on the stereotype of nutrition and following a diet, a survey of women and laboratory blood tests.

The reasons for this phenomenon are still unclear, but most experts believe that this is due to the popularity of low-carbohydrate diets, which are adhered to by an increasing number of women.

The research leader Dr. Muliner says that a popular diet with a limited amount of bread and flakes leads to a decrease in folate intake. Since the popularity of this diet fell at the beginning of the 2000s, it is quite possible to explain this dynamics of the vitamin level.

In addition, the explanation of this fact can be not only a diet, but also the fullness. Scientists have proved that in the body of fat people vitamin metabolism is different than in the body of skinny, so the epidemic of obesity among young women leads to an increase in the need for vitamin and, as a consequence, a decrease in its concentration in the blood.

Replenishment of folic acid can be by taking vitamin supplements, but only less than a third of women of childbearing age regularly take some vitamin preparations.

Effects that will affect newborns are not yet visible, but scientists believe that a decrease in the number of congenital malformations of the nervous system in children that was achieved in the second half of the 1990s was brought to naught by the end of 2004.

To prevent the development of intrauterine malformations, all young women are recommended to eat foods rich in folic acid - greens, unpurified grain bread, oatmeal and other flakes.
