In this regard, the American non-governmental organization The National Resources Defense Council filed a suit against the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with a demand to restrict the sale of hygienic products with triclosan and triclocarban.
Representatives of the "Council for the Protection of National Resources" refer to the data of several studies, according to which these substances cause damage to the reproductive system, reduce the quality of sperm, and also disrupt the production of sex hormones and thyroid hormones. The claim notes that according to monitoring, residual amounts of triclosan were detected in 75 percent of Americans over six years of age.
For the first time, the FDA intended to investigate the safety of the use of triclosan and triclocarban more than 30 years ago. In particular, in 1978, the supervisory authority proposed limiting the use of these substances after the completion of all studies. In 1994, the severity of some of the detergent ingredients was revised.
However, according to the lawsuit, since 1994 the share of hygienic products with triclosan and triclocarban in the market has only increased.
According to the plaintiff, FDA experts were not able to timely develop standards for the use of triclosan and triclocarban, thus, the agency violated federal legislation regarding consumer safety. The defendant for the suit also indicates the head of the US Department of Health, Kathleen Sebelius (Kathleen Sebelius). Representatives of the FDA and the US Ministry of Health declined to comment on the lawsuit.
