In Spain, a vaccine has been created, the use of which in colon cancer will eliminate the appearance of metastases localized in the liver. Over its development, scientists have been engaged for ten years. Financial support for this research is provided by the Spanish Cancer Association Research Foundation.
This type of cancer is treatable: about 40 percent of patients manage to be cured due to a combination of surgical intervention with chemotherapy. Nevertheless, colon cancer in terms of the number of lethal cases is confidently holding the second place.
To stop the spread of metastases in the liver in patients who underwent an operation to eliminate colon cancer, usually fails.
This is due to the fact that the diagnosis of this type of malignant formation is difficult, often colon cancer is detected late, when the liver has already metastasized.
The goal of the authors of the development is to create a drug that can activate the immune system of the patient in such a way that she has the opportunity to independently recognize cancer cells and successfully fight them. The vaccine will help those who are operated on for colon cancer to get rid of the development of liver metastases, and thus create favorable conditions for recovery.
