About 20% of women who develop lung cancer have never smoked, according to a study by US scientists. Their Swedish colleagues talk about other figures - 8%.

The cause of cancer in this case is considered passive smoking, which affects women in the family.

The common opinion that lung cancer - a disease of smokers makes many people feel confused. It is difficult for them to talk about the disease, because it seems that others will blame them.

At the same time, smoking more increases the risk of lung cancer in women than in men.

The reason for this is not clear, but it is believed that this is due to the fact that women are more prone to the damaging effects of nicotine and other carcinogens contained in cigarettes.

The number of cases of lung cancer among non-smoking women is also higher than among men. This is because women are much more likely to be exposed to secondhand smoke than men, although they are not considered smokers.

The general risk with active smoking rises from ten to thirty times the size.
