Canadian researchers have found that taking nitroglycerin by women at risk for premature birth can reduce the risk of preterm birth and improve the health of a newborn baby.
The patch with the gradual release of nitroglycerin has a strong curative effect on the uterus and fetus, without causing such serious complications as traditional therapy, according to researchers at Queen's University.
A similar nitroglycerin patch is commonly used to treat patients with cardiovascular diseases. During the research, the patch was placed on the skin of the woman during labor, which relaxed the uterus and caused an improvement in blood flow through the placenta.
Using a plaster, the pregnancy could be extended to three weeks. In addition, the use of a patch reduced the risk of pulmonary diseases of the fetus, which are often observed in preterm labor.
The study lasted about five years and determined the outcome for the fetus with further monitoring of the baby.
The study involved 153 women admitted to the clinic with preterm labor.
Premature appearance is not only an immediate threat to the child's life due to immaturity of the body's basic systems, but also a high risk of neurological complications, problems with training and breathing.
The main researcher, Dr. Graeme Smith, said that the use of the new method can reduce the risk of serious complications, which are usually observed in preterm infants at 70%.
