While the weather is getting too cold for the beach, the hottest sun lovers are moving to the solarium to save their summer tan, USA Today writes, noting that many of them are aware of the health hazard.

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, affiliated with the World Health Organization, people under the age of 30 who visit the solarium increase the risk of skin cancer by 75%. According to a study by the National Cancer Institute, the number of melanoma cases among young women from 1973 to 2004 - the period when the visit to sunrooms significantly increased - almost tripled.

For some, sunburn is not just a bad habit, but an addiction, says dermatologist David Fisher, author of an article published this month in The New England Journal of Medicine.

According to the April poll of 229 visitors to the solarium, published in the journal Archives of Dermatology, up to 39% of them fit into the criteria for dependence. People who suited these criteria were more prone to anxiety, depression and other addictive things, such as drugs and alcohol, says the author of the article Liz Zhabo.

According to Stephen Feldman, a dermatologist at the University of Wick Forest School of Medicine, the cause of dependence may be endorphins that are released under the influence of ultraviolet rays and form positive emotions in a person.
