The international team of researchers for the first time detected antibodies in the human body that are capable of neutralizing various strains of the SARS virus.

Researchers led by Dimitry Dimitrov from the National Institute of Oncology of the United States published their data in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

When the outbreak of SARS occurred in 2002, Dimitrov began his studies in which he studied the properties of the virus and the mechanisms by which it penetrates into the human cell.

The discovery of two cell wall fragments consisting of glycoproteins has shown that in the human body there are two types of antibodies that can bind to these parts of the virus.

One of two kinds of antibodies, called S230. 15, was found in the blood of a patient who had pneumonia, but recovered from it. Another type of antibody, codenamed m396, was obtained from the blood of 10 volunteers.

In laboratory tests, both types of antibodies showed their effectiveness in binding viruses from outbreaks of 2002-2003 and 2003-2004. In addition, antibodies were also effective against viruses found in mammals that were a natural reservoir of infection.

Further study of antibodies with mutated viruses has shown that two types of antibodies used together can completely protect against all types of virus.
