To have good health, one must love oneself. Such a formula was derived by psychologist Andy Martens from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand together with colleagues. High self-esteem makes us feel safe when we face a threat. In modern society, the threat is associated with social upheavals that can severely affect the nerves. The result is the protection of the heart and the immune system, notes New Scientist.

The scientist decided in the course of experiments to find out whether this sense of security gives some advantages in terms of health. A total of 184 people participated in the tests. In one round of tests, the participants voiced a false response to their appearance. The meaning is to raise or lower self-esteem.

In another trial, participants were asked to independently assess the level of self-assessment every day for two weeks. Parallel to this, the activity of the cardiac tonus of the vagus nerve was analyzed - an indicator of how much the parasympathetic nervous system affects the heart.

The parasympathetic nervous system acts in a certain way to calm the heart, it reduces the level of stress and inflammation. With its insufficient activity, the occurrence of cardiovascular problems and autoimmune disease. And in the course of experiments, high self-esteem, precisely, was associated with an increase in the tone of the vagus nerve. It turns out that the influence of a good attitude towards oneself on health is proved.
