Scientists suggest that they have found a potentially new possibility of treating obesity by blocking the increase in stomach volume.

The researchers identified two types of proteins that relax the digestive canal during the intake of large amounts of food.

In theory, a new drug should lead to a blockage of muscle relaxation and thereby possibly suppress the desire to take an excessive amount of food. Two proteins, identified by researchers as P2Y1 and P2Y11, regulate both fast and slow relaxation of the digestive canal.

The human stomach in a relaxed state has an internal volume of 75 ml, but with the relaxation of its walls it can reach a size of up to two liters and more.

This expansion is controlled by nerve cells in the walls of the stomach that pass molecules that stimulate P2Y1 and P2Y11, located in muscle cells, as well as in the walls of the digestive canal.

According to scientists, reducing the stomach through surgical intervention is an expensive and dangerous procedure, so using a new method can be a hope for many people in terms of weight loss, but still the best way to regulate weight is still lifestyle changes.
