Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fatty fish, can help avoid one of the most common causes of vision loss, say scientists.

One of the most common causes of vision loss is age-related macular degeneration (VDM). This is a progressive disease that affects the central part of the retina (macula), which leads to a gradual loss of vision. Most often, this disease occurs in people of advanced age.

People diagnosed with VDM lose the ability to see small details, and in some cases complete loss of vision is recorded, even though they still have a small percentage of peripheral vision.

Scientists from the University of Melbourne (Australia) have studied the results of nine previous studies and WDM. A total of 88974 participants took part in the research, among them there were 3000 people diagnosed with VDM.

The results of previous studies have already shown the connection of omega-3 fatty acids with a variety of positive effects on the health of the body, the most important of which was the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on eye health.

As you know, quite a lot of omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish. As a result of the research conducted by scientists, it was found that eating fish twice a week reduced the risk of WMD by approximately 38%. The results of this study were published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.
