Tomato - the most widely grown fruit in the world. Japanese scientists recently discovered in tomatoes a substance that prevents the development of vascular diseases and positively affects the exchange of cholesterol.
A group of scientists led by Teruo Kavada (Kyoto University) was looking for substances that could stop the development of dyslipidemia. Dyslipidemia is a rise in the blood level of lipids, such as cholesterol. Dyslipidemia itself does not manifest itself in any way, but it leads to cardiovascular diseases. To prevent these diseases, it is necessary to prevent the violation of lipid metabolism.
It has long been known that tomatoes are extremely useful. The new substance found in them, 9-oxo-octadecadienoic acid, also possesses antidislipidemic properties.
The substance enhances the oxidation of fatty acids and positively affects the regulation of lipid metabolism in the liver. These properties should help in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
"Finding in a food product a substance that helps prevent chronic cardiovascular diseases is a great success. This means that people can improve their health with the help of the most ordinary food, "- says the author of the study.
