Scientists compared muscle mass and the proportion of fat in the body of young athletes who consumed chocolate milkshake and sports drinks.
They asked 10 professional cyclists and 32 amateurs to ride a bike for 90 minutes at a moderate intensity.
It was found that significantly more energy was available to those who consumed chocolate milk with a low fat content.
They also managed to get rid of more fat cells and actively build muscle mass.
