Blind people received the hope to gain sight with the help of a "bionic eye," writes The Scotsman. In Britain, the recruitment of a group of volunteers for the first study of this technical novelty.

Surgeons from the King's College Hospital in London under the direction of Tim Jackson hope to select six patients for testing in order to begin work in March. Actually, the developer of the device is a German company. The implant is placed under the retina and operates on the principle of a digital camera.

The essence of the device's operation is as follows: a 3-square-millimeter matrix, including 1500 light sensors, sends pulsed electrical signals to adjacent neural cells that transmit messages to the brain. Such an implant will help people suffering from pigment retinitis - a hereditary disease that leads to the destruction of the retina.

This implant with a microchip has already been tested in Germany on three patients who lost sight. It is known that there he helped them to recognize objects, move freely around the room, learn by the hour how long, and distinguish the shades of gray. British testing will be another step towards the introduction of this technology into the arsenal of doctors.
