Airbags in cars reduce the risk of injury only for people of medium height, and for people with a height below 149cm and above 190cm they increase injuries in the event of an accident, say scientists.
Scientists from the University of Portland, Oregon, conducted a study on the safety of the use of airbags. In the last 10-15 years, airbags have been the focus of attention. The specialists found out that they were created for protection, but for certain groups of people they rather create an additional risk.
Researchers believe that the weight of a person does not affect the probability of injury.
This is a very important conclusion, because many of the modern models of airbags use exactly the weight to calculate the degree of deployment of the pillow during a collision.
Scientists advise passengers of high and small growth, if possible, to sit behind, and drivers with non-standard growth should move away from the airbag at least 30 cm. Experts also offer manufacturers to equip cars with the function of turning the airbag on and off.
