People taking antipsychotics are in an increased risk of stroke, say British scientists.

The results of the previous study showed that some types of drugs increase the risk of a stroke. However, after this study, experts concluded that all neuroleptic drugs increase the risk of stroke. The results of the study were published in the British Medical Journal.

The study involved 6700 patients. All participants were about 80 years of age. The specialists studied the medical history of participants and concluded that antipsychotics increase the risk of stroke by 40%, and in patients with Alzheimer's disease the risk increased threefold.

Experts believe that people taking antipsychotics should be more likely to undergo a brain examination, and doctors prescribing such drugs should be very careful, given the state of mental health, pressure and other factors of the patient. Patients with dementia scientists recommend not to prescribe antipsychotics in general. Usually neuroleptic drugs are prescribed to patients with mental disorders, such as schizophrenia and severe depression. Also, sometimes such drugs are used in cases of severe aggression in humans.
