Dutch scientists report that fruits and vegetables in the diet reduce the risk of colon cancer, although such a diet can have bad consequences for smokers.

They found that the likelihood of developing oncology, on the contrary, increases for those who can not quit smoking and prefers a fruit and vegetable diet.

This conclusion was made after studying the data on 500 000 people from 10 countries in Europe, which for 8.5 years filled out questionnaires regarding smoking and diet.

Eating 600 grams of vegetables and fruits, non-smokers reduce the risk of colon cancer by 25% compared to those who eat only 220 grams or less.

The scientists concluded that the diet minimizes the risk of oncology only for people without a bad habit. That is, you need to quit smoking in order to reduce the risk of developing cancer.

More than 30% of cases can be prevented by changing the way of life, and first of all - to give up smoking, lose weight and eat more plant foods.

But this study also shows that substances from fruits and vegetables increase the carcinogenic factor of tobacco smoke.
