Once again it was possible to prove that some vitamin supplements not only do not prolong, but even shorten the life span, Danish scientists.
Many people know that vitamins A, C and E, as well as beta-carotene, can prevent the "oxidative process" that occurs in certain serious diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular diseases. This effect is achieved in the body by the destruction of free radicals, which are supposed to cause disease.
Scientists conducted a study with the participation of 233 people, among whom were both healthy and sick people. All of them took food supplements. Taking into account various factors, Danish scientists concluded that vitamin A increases the risk of premature death by 16%, beta-carotene by 7%, and vitamin E by 4%. Vitamin C does not seem to affect longevity in any way. According to scientists, additional studies are needed to influence the effects of vitamin C and selenium.
Also experts could not find any evidence that antioxidants contribute to disease prevention.
On the contrary, they say, vitamins A and E interfere with the work of natural mechanisms of body protection. Today millions of people in the world supplement their nutrition with vitamins. However, the question of the benefits of using them has never been raised by anyone. British scientists, in turn, recently said that people should try to get vitamins required by their body through a balanced diet, and called for caution when taking large doses of antioxidant complexes.
