There are many unconventional ways of using banana peels: it can polish silver items, leather shoes or clean the leaves of domestic plants. Recently, scientists have found another application of banana skins - it turned out that they perfectly clean water from toxic metals.
A group of scientists led by Gustavo Castro came to the conclusion that in this way it is possible to purify from heavy metals such as lead and copper, sewage from mines, farms or plants. Heavy metals damage the health of people and the environment. Modern methods of water purification from these metals are quite expensive, and some substances used for purification are toxic in themselves. According to other studies, other plant waste, such as coconut fibers or peanut shells, can purify water from toxins.
Gustavo Castro decided to check whether it is possible to clean the water with a crushed banana peel.
It turned out that the peel quickly and effectively removes lead water from the river water, copper, as well as many other contaminants. A banana filter can be used up to 11 times without losing its cleaning properties. The researchers add that the banana peel is a very promising filter, due to the low cost and the absence of the need for preliminary chemical treatment.
