British experts from Harvard Medical School found that one or two portions of fish per week will significantly reduce the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD), reports The Telegraph. The secret lies in the fatty acids omega-3, which are most often found in fatty fish like canned salmon and tuna.

The leading author of the scientific work, Dr. William Kristen of the Harvard Medical School, said that the mackerel is most useful from this point of view. It's no secret that hundreds of people lose sight with age due to cell death in the macula - the central part of the retina. When a given element is degenerated, a black spot appears in the person's field of view, which is constantly increasing in size.

In view of the aging of the world's population as a whole, the urgency of the methods of treating AMD constantly increases. Harvard specialists decided to find a universal tool, analyzing the results of another study of more than 38,000 women.

So, at the disposal of scientists there were completed questionnaires with questions about the diet, and information on the development of AMD in 235 cases.

According to the data presented, the least affected were women who consumed a lot of omega-3 fish. They had a 38% reduction in risk. By the way, in the evaluation, scientists took into account the forms of omega-3 - eicosapentanoic acid (DHA) and docosahexaenoic acid (EPA).
