Oleic acid is a useful fatty acid that is part of olive oil. Specialists from the University of Edinburgh found that it suppresses the activity of genes associated with cancer. The researchers studied the effect of oleic acid on the miR-7 molecule in the brain. This molecule prevents the development of cancer.

Experiments with living cells and cellular extracts showed: oleic acid did not allow the protein MSI2 to stop production of miR-7. The molecule continued to be developed and provided protection from cancer.

Scientists hope that their discovery will help in developing new methods for preventing brain cancer.

By the way, earlier the staff of the Institute of Medical Research of Feinstein found out: the anthelmintic preparation mebendazole is able to cope with some types of brain cancer, including low-grade glioma. Mebendazole destroyed tumor cells in the same way as vincristine (a drug used to treat brain cancer).
