A review of the latest news and results of medical research related to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

Replacement of intervertebral discs is more economical for medical institutions than the often used spinal fusion. Such findings were published in the journal SAS of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery.

The studies revealed a difference in the number of days spent by patients in the hospital and the difference in the cost of treatment, which turned out to be almost 50% higher for people who underwent a vertebral fusion operation compared to patients who underwent intervertebral disk replacement.

The online journal Cell Biology (Cell Biology) publishes the results of studies on the effect of the Wnt Frizzled-9 receptor (Fzd9) on the formation of bone tissue. The results of this study are encouraging specialists who talk about the possible emergence of a new way of treating osteoporosis.

Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanical Engineering and Automation have developed a system for collecting information on the physics of movements of the knee joint, using special motion sensors.

With the help of these developments, attending physicians will be able to assess the effectiveness of knee joint surgery for a real change in the motor functions of the knee joint, and not only on the basis of subjective feelings of the patient.

Another interesting study was presented at the XXVII annual meeting of the American Academy of Pain Medicine. It confirms the effectiveness of percutaneous decompression as a method of treating patients with lumbar spinal stenosis. The study refers to the long-term nature of this method of treatment and the absence of any side effects.
