In women with insufficient intake of vitamin D during pregnancy, the risk of having a baby by caesarean section increases, experts say.
Scientists conducted a study in which 253 women attended the Boston hospital. It turned out that women in labor who had a reduced level of vitamin D were at risk of a cesarean section four times more. The study was published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
Vitamin D is very important for the functioning of muscles, so it is not surprising that women with a lowered level of this vitamin significantly increase the risk of caesarean section during labor, experts say. However, there were cases when vitamin D deficiency was observed among those women who took the necessary amount of vitamins during pregnancy. Scientists plan to further study the effects of vitamin D and its digestibility in the body during pregnancy.
