Women who do not smoke, are active and adhere to the Mediterranean diet, will live 15 years longer than others, scientists from Maastricht University. But men living in the same regime, will receive only 8 additional years of life, writes The Independent.

Recall: The Mediterranean diet is rich in vegetables, it has olive oil, fruits, nuts, fish and whole grains, but little meat and alcohol. The researchers tested its effect on the example of 120,000 people aged 55-69. The study began in 1986 and continued until 1996.

Scientists have calculated the "indicator of a healthy lifestyle", based on factors such as smoking, exercise, weight and diet. The professor of epidemiology, Piet van den Brandt, explains:

"Before that, few people have tried to analyze the relationship between a combination of lifestyle factors and death. We found that a special diet was more affected by women. A particular merit here belongs to vegetables, nuts and low consumption of alcohol ".

In turn, Barbara Dinsdale of the British Heart Society stresses that the Mediterranean diet has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Plus, it does not contain large amounts of cholesterol and helps control sugar.
