German specialists have established a genetic link between the inflammation of the surrounding tissues of the teeth and heart attacks, reports the BBC.

Previously, it was known that the onset of periodontitis (inflammation of the surrounding tissues of teeth and bone around the tips of the roots of the teeth) is associated with heart disease, but how could it not be established, experts explained. In a new study, a group of scientists discovered a genetic mutation in people with periodontitis and heart attacks. The author of the experiment Arne Schaefer noted that for this reason it is necessary to treat gums and caries very seriously and contact a doctor as soon as possible.

Experts believe that the cause is the bacteria that lead to inflammation of the gums or tooth decay, and then to changes in the arteries, which in turn provokes heart attacks.

There is also another version that bacteria prevent the expansion of blood vessels and the normal delivery of blood to the tissues of the heart, penetrating into the bloodstream.

Both ischemic heart disease and periodontitis are associated with the same risk factors - smoking, diabetes and obesity. At the moment, experts are absolutely sure of the genetic connection and believe that in the presence of inflammation of the gums and caries, preventive measures should be taken for heart disease, Arne Schaefer.
