A study conducted by scientists from the University of the United Arab Emirates in Al Ain showed that eating saffron favorably affects the liver and protects it from tumors.
Experiments on laboratory animals yielded multifarious results, which makes further investigations worthwhile. The results of the study will be published in the September issue of the journal "Hepatology" (Hepatology).
During the experiment, scientists added saffron to the diet of laboratory mice in the amount of 75, 150 and 300 mg per day. After some time, rodents were injected with a substance that stimulated the growth of neoplasms in the liver. After that, saffron for food continued to be added for another 22 weeks.
The greatest protective effect was observed in those mice that received the greatest amounts of saffron, but this effect was also observed in animals from other groups - to varying degrees.
Further research in this direction will show whether this seasoning can be used to prevent liver disease in humans, and for now, according to the US Centers for Disease Control, the most effective way to improve the liver is to avoid drinking alcohol, at least in large quantities.
