In English there is a special term comfort eating, which literally means comfortable eating. By this term, experts identify situations in which people use fatty foods to relieve stress levels. For example, an abandoned woman sticks to the grief with cakes, and a man who has lost his job leans on beer and crackers.

Weight jumps caused by a particular diet, or the so-called yoy-yo diet, directly increases the risk of a comfortable meal. The constant loss and weight gain that occur when people then take a diet, then give it up, leads to an increase in the level of the stress hormone in the body, as the researchers established. And this most stress people are most often extinguished by different not quite healthy food.

Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania observed a group of laboratory mice. In the first three weeks they were kept on a low-calorie diet, resulting in mice lost up to 10-15% of the weight.

The level of stress in their body has increased, and the behavior of rodents has become severely depressed. Specialists have established that several genes played an important role in regulating the level of stress and nutrition processes..

Even when the mice were returned to their previous weight, their genetic changes remained the same. In simulated stressful situations, these mice consumed twice as many foods with a high fat content than rodents from the control group.
