Specialists have discovered a biological mechanism that explains the decrease in the effectiveness of contraceptive pills in overweight women.

It is believed that with obesity, the desired concentration of the drug is achieved twice as slow as the occurrence of dangerous days, even when taking contraceptives. It is known that any such drugs are tested in people whose body weight does not exceed the norm. But it is the extra fat that changes the pharmokinetics of drugs, and it is also influenced by other factors that change the metabolism.

The researchers explained that contraceptives accumulate just in adipose tissue, but their level does not depend on the amount of fat, but, most likely, affects the time to reach the desired concentration. At normal weight, the maximum dose of the drug accumulates in the body for five days, and for obesity - for 10 days.

Increasing the dose of contraceptives may contribute to better contraceptive protection, but will affect women's health, researchers explained..

On the contrary, often doctors reduce doses of oral contraceptives to overweight patients in order to reduce the risk of thrombosis. The study showed that with a body mass index between 25-30 there is already a risk of a decrease in the effectiveness of tablets. Scientists plan to create tests that determine the effective dose of tablets depending on body weight.
