1,4-dioxane is a by-product obtained from the production of another hazardous substance, sodium lauryl sulfate, which is widely used in cosmetics, personal care products and detergents. Experiments on laboratory rats have shown that 1,4-dioxane has carcinogenic activity, causing cancer of the abdominal cavity organs.
Although the immediate danger of 1,4-dioxane for humans has not yet been scientifically proven, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has previously recommended that manufacturers not include this substance in cosmetic products.
However, 1,4-dioxane may appear in shampoo and soap composition unintentionally, as a by-product of other ingredients. So, according to The Daily Mail, a study conducted in 2008 showed that this substance is present in 46% of personal care products sold in American supermarkets.
So now the FDA has been approached by senators from the State of New York with a demand to completely ban 1,4-dioxane, excluding the very possibility of its accidental appearance in consumer goods.
