The intake of vitamins reduces the risk of age-related maculopathy

As part of a prospective epidemiological study, Physicians Health Study I (USA), 21,120 male physicians in the United States were examined, who had no age-related maculopathy at the beginning of the 1982 survey.

During the follow-up period of 12.5 years, 279 cases of age-related maculopathy with a significant loss of vision.

In multivariate analysis, compared to people who did not take extra vitamins, supplemented with vitamin E differed significantly by a 13% reduction in the risk of age-related maculopathy (relative risk = 0.87), taking multivitamins had a significant risk reduction of 10%, (relative risk = 0.90).
