Daily intake of vitamin D in a dose of 700 - 1000 IU at least 19% reduces the risk of falls and bone fractures among the elderly. However, a dose of less than 700 IU has no effect against damage to bone tissue, experts say.
ME is an international unit for vitamins and other biologically active substances. Every year, every third person at the age of 65 and older experiences serious fractures as a result of a fall. Vitamin D plays an important role not only for strengthening bones, but also increases strength and balance in old age, which in turn prevents incautious falls and physical injury. However, orthopedists emphasize that the benefit of the nutrient depends on the dose taken. The study was published in the British Medical Journal.
In the course of the study, experts found that a daily dose of vitamin D in the amount of 700 - 1000 IU reduces the likelihood of falls among people of old age by 19-26%. Such results remained unchanged after taking into account the factors of age, the frequency of independent movements and additional intake of calcium.
Protection for bones with the intake of vitamin D begins to manifest itself within two to five months of regular intake and continues after a year of daily intake.
According to the researchers, people over 65 years of age need to receive a sufficient amount of vitamin D with vitamin supplements every day, because using sunlight and some food products - the main sources of the substance, it is difficult to obtain adequate doses of the component.
