Pregnant women with late toxicosis are at increased risk of developing thyroid health problems, researchers say..

Groups of scientists from the United States and Norway found that women with late toxicosis have reduced activity of the thyroid gland, which can lead to fatigue and depression. For this reason, experts urge women to check the thyroid gland on a par with standard examinations of the kidneys and the heart during pregnancy. The study was published in the British Medical Journal.

The thyroid gland is responsible for the level of hormones that are produced by the body and regulate the cardiovascular system, blood pressure and body temperature. With a decreased activity of the thyroid gland, a condition such as hypothyroidism can arise which, in turn, can cause fatigue, weakness and depression, and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Pre-eclampsia is a disease associated with high blood pressure during pregnancy, and if the disease is not treated, you can endanger the life of the mother and child. Only in the UK every year this disease takes the lives of 1000 babies.

The exact causes of pre-eclampsia remain unclear, but it is known that this condition is associated with an elevated level of certain proteins during the second half of pregnancy, researchers explained..
