According to researchers, cranberries, known as an effective remedy for the treatment of diseases of the bladder, can be no less useful in the treatment of conventional and genital herpes. Such an opinion is held by experts from the Taiwan Medical University Kaosiyan.

Their British counterparts objected, noting that there is no serious evidence that eating these berries or consuming a prepared from them mors really help in the treatment of herpes. However, the preliminary results of the study were published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.

Specialists, in particular, investigated the healing properties of alpine cranberries, also known as Vaccinium vitis-idaea. This plant is also sometimes called cowberry and mitchella. It is an excellent tool for treating various gastric disorders, and dried flowers are used to produce funds from lung diseases.

From traditional cranberries, Taiwan researchers identified a composition called proanthocyanidin A-1. They investigated its effectiveness against herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2 or herpes simplex infection) that causes normal and genital herpes. Laboratory experiments have shown that proanthocyanidin A-1 significantly blocks the action of HSV-2 without causing any side effects. It does not kill the virus, but it significantly reduces the degree of its impact. Taiwanese scientists intend to continue their research in order to thoroughly study the mechanism of work of the substance they extracted.
