Those who are unable to refrain from drinking alcohol can at least minimize damage to the gastric mucosa if they eat strawberries, say scientists. A team of Italian, Serbian and Spanish researchers confirmed the protective effect that this berry possesses after conducting experiments on rats, reports The Times of India.

Dr. Sarah Tulipani of the University of Barcelona explains that "the positive effect of strawberries is associated not only with its antioxidant properties, but also with the fact that it activates antioxidant protection and body enzymes".

The results of the research show that a diet rich in strawberries can have a positive effect if it is a question of preventing gastric diseases associated with the generation of free radicals or other active forms of oxygen, according to an article published by scientists in the journal Public Library of Science One.

In addition, according to them, strawberries can also slow the formation of stomach ulcers in humans. Gastritis or inflammation of the gastric mucosa is associated with alcohol consumption, but can also be caused by a viral infection or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (eg, aspirin).

In these cases, the use of strawberries can reduce damage to the gastric mucosa, notes Maurizio Battino of the University of Politecnico Marche in Italy.

Scientists conducted an experiment in rats: for 10 days they were given daily 40 mg of strawberry extract per kilogram of weight. The rats were then given alcohol and analyzed the state of their stomachs. It turned out that those rodents who used the extract had fewer ulcers than the rest.
