The chemical substance bisphenol A, used for the production of plastic, CDs, credit cards, as well as to cover the inner surfaces of cans, affects the state of the cardiovascular system, according to American scientists.
Tests conducted in the United States in a national study showed that patients with elevated bisphenol levels were 33% more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases. Bisphenol can be absorbed into the blood and accumulate in the body over the years. Bisphenol can be detected in 90% of people. A high concentration of the substance in the body carries a danger to the heart and health in general, experts say.
A previous study found that a high concentration of this chemical doubled the risk of heart disease.
Scientists have not yet discovered the biological mechanism that leads to the development of diseases due to bisphenol poisoning. They plan to find out in more detail what causes this association with an increased risk of heart disease, and to clarify whether they are related only to bisphenol or to some other factor related to the effects of this substance.
