Red oranges inhibit obesity and reduce the risk of cancer, according to scientists from the European Institute of Oncology under the leadership of Pierre-Giuseppe Pelicci, assistant professor of the Department of General Pathology, Research University in Milan.
The studies were carried out under laboratory conditions in mice. However, scientists hope that their results, like many other achievements of nutrigenomics - a science that combines knowledge about nutrition and genetics - can be transferred in the near future and to humans.
The diet, rich in red fruits, red vegetables and greens with a high content of antioxidants, has an anti-carcinogenic effect, says Dr. Pelicci. In the course of the experiment, experts wanted to compare the quality of red and common oranges, and also to study their ability to influence obesity, resulting from the consumption of fatty foods.
In the course of the experiment, one group of mice was given red orange juice instead of water for a high-calorie diet, another group with the same diet was given juice of ordinary oranges. It turned out that the mice that were given red juice did not get well, and those who drank the usual juice, recovered as well as those mice that were given water.
In the coming months, scientists plan to study which substances contained in red oranges, red vegetables and greens, contribute to the fight against excess weight.
