Teens who need a lot of effort to get out of bed in the morning get insufficient sunlight. This leads to a disruption in the operation of their biological clocks and, as a consequence, to an inadequate production of a melatonin sleep hormone in the evening, according to American researchers.
Scientists came to the conclusion that modern adolescents spend too much time in enclosed spaces. This leads to the fact that the lack of sunlight, especially in the morning, disrupts the work of their biological clock: at night they feel less sleepy, and as a result, they go to bed late, and the next day feel very tired. Researchers gave this phenomenon the name "teenage midnight syndrome" and stressed that during the exams this sleep disturbance can cause bad grades.
To verify the correctness of their theory, scientists conducted an experiment. They selected eleven 13-14 year olds and each of them was given special glasses that did not miss the blue color, so that the subjects wore them during the day.
Five days later, it turned out that the teenagers began to go to bed an average of half an hour later than before.
The researchers concluded that the cause of sleep disorders in young people often lies in the fact that they receive insufficient amount of sunlight on their way to school. They believe that the easiest way out of the situation would be to introduce in the projects of school buildings such changes that would contribute to better penetration into the premises of sunlight.
