According to a new study conducted by the American space corporation NASA, a sharp change in sleep time requires a much higher voltage from the human body than previously thought.

Earlier, NASA advised the cosmonauts who were going to training for some time before the flight began to go to bed two hours later than usual so that the organism could restructure and get used to a new biological rhythm.

But the researchers came to the conclusion that the human body relatively painlessly tolerates a change in the usual hours of sleep only for one hour a day, reports ABC News with reference to the AP.

"There is no doubt that it is difficult to change the rhythm of the biological clock," says the research director, Professor of the Medical Center at the University of Pittsburgh Timothy Monk. "We are trying to understand how a person copes with the fact that his body is so hard to bear".

In space, there is no regular change of day and night, so astronauts have to adapt to the unusual sleep regime, and this process requires considerable effort from the nervous system.

"Space is an environment that does not forgive," Monk says.. "If the cosmonauts do not properly schedule their sleep, the result will not be good for them, and they will stand up broken, with a sense of fatigue and irritation, and this can lead to mistakes in their work".

Monk acknowledged that, with serious difficulties, changes in the habitual biological rhythm are encountered by many, for example, travelers and ordinary employees, who often have to change the work schedule.

"Many of us often have to change their sleep time, for example, to adjust to the hours of work or study, or to changes in travel," says the researcher.. - For us it always remains a question of whether we will be able to adapt to a new rhythm at once, or it will take several days or even weeks. Our research is aimed at helping to solve this issue in the best way ".

Timothy Monk gives some useful advice for those who have to work when all normal people are already sleeping. First, he advises, after work at night, go to bed as quickly as possible. Secondly, you need to sleep in the most dark room, while it is desirable that no foreign noise interferes with sleep. Also, in order to better adapt to the new time of sleep, you need to drink less coffee and avoid drinking alcohol "for sleep to come".
