Regular consumption of green tea can be a good prevention of many common eye diseases, including glaucoma, say Chinese scientists.

The researchers found that some substances contained in green tea have a beneficial effect on the eye tissue, so green tea can be a good preventative against a number of common eye diseases - such as, for example, glaucoma.

We are talking about a group of antioxidants called catechins that penetrate the retina, the lens and other parts of the eye and prevent the damaging effects of oxidation processes occurring in them. Thus, the introduction of an additional dose of catechins into the body helps to reduce oxidative stress - the destruction of cells that occurs due to oxidative processes, experts say.

During the experiment, scientists gave rats green tea, and then checked whether the catechins influenced their vision.

It turned out that catechins significantly reduce oxidative stress in the tissues of the eye, and that this effect persists for a sufficiently long period - up to twenty hours.

The obtained results show that the use of green tea can benefit the eyes due to the fact that the catechins contained in it contribute to reducing oxidative stress, the authors of the paper. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
