If cardiac activity is disturbed, products containing potassium are useful. Potassium stimulates the work of the muscles of the heart, helps to remove fluid from the body.

Daily rate - 2-3 grams. A distinctive feature of potassium is its ability to cause increased excretion of water from the body. Therefore, dietary rations with a high content of the element facilitate the functioning of the cardiovascular system when it is deficient, cause the disappearance or a significant decrease in edema.

Potassium, as a macroelement, is the main intracellular ion, whereas the main extracellular ion is sodium. The interaction of these ions is important in maintaining the isotonicity of cells. Potassium ions play an important role in regulating the numerous functions of the body. Potassium is involved in the process of carrying out nerve impulses and transferring them to innervated organs. Promotes better brain activity, improving oxygen supply. Has a positive effect in many allergic conditions. Reduces blood pressure. Potassium is also required for skeletal muscle contractions. It improves muscle contraction in muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis.

"People who use inadequate amounts of potassium, are at risk of developing strokes," - reported in the journal "Neurology". A study was conducted in which 5,600 people participated. Over the course of four years, they observed the number and types of strokes that occur in some of them. Researchers came to the conclusion that people who do not consume enough potassium, the risk of developing a stroke by 1.5 times higher, compared with those who have such a lack is not observed. The first group included patients who consumed less than 2.4 g of potassium per day, the second group - more than 4 grams.

Other studies have also shown that potassium deficiency increases the risk of mortality due to strokes. Thus, diuretics and some other medications, together with water, can remove potassium from the body. Diuretics are used to treat hypertension, cardiac and renal diseases. "Thus, diuretics can be a double-edged sword: on the one hand, they certainly reduce the risk of stroke, and on the other hand, removing potassium from the body, increase this risk," says the author of the study Deborah M. Green from the Neurological Medical Center in Honolulu (Hawaii).

This issue can be especially important for people with diabetes and smokers, because in their case, even a small risk can be a trigger for the development of many complications. The main source of potassium in the body are food products.

Rich in potassium citrus, green vegetables, sunflowers, bananas, dried apricots.

However, few people know that a valuable source of potassium is millet. Millet should be burned on high heat, but so that it does not change its color. Take a third of a glass of calcined millet and rinse it thoroughly. Then add two-thirds of a glass of water and cook over a low heat. This portion should be eaten within 24 hours. If desired, you can slightly podsolit or sweeten it.
