The use of red wine contributes to the emergence of a protective effect for brain cells from damage after a stroke, consider the American researchers from the Johns Hopkins University.

Specialists conducted an experiment in mice, which established that resveratrol - a substance found in peel and seeds of red grapes - protects brain cells. It turned out that rodents who received a single dose of resveratrol suffered significantly less brain damage after a stroke than the rest of the mouse.

Scientists suggest that resveratrol increases the level of the already existing enzyme heme oxygenase, which protects neurons from damage. As a result, when a stroke occurs, the brain is able to withstand the threat.

Experts believe that a moderate intake of red wine protects the brain cells from damage, but do not forget that alcohol abuse has serious health consequences. The study was published in Experimental Neurology.
