Conscientious evidence has been obtained that the first 2 weeks of life is the most favorable period (from the first three months) for surgery of congenital cataracts. If the operation is performed during this period, the minimum number of complications is observed.
A retrospective analysis of the case histories of children operated on in the first three months of life for congenital cataracts. The results of operations on 80 eyes of 55 children with a follow-up period of 6 months or more after surgery were evaluated. Cataract was bilateral in 25 children, one-sided - in 30 children. In all cases, a lenectomy with limrectal vitrectomy was performed. After the operation, glasses or contact lenses were prescribed.
Operational and postoperative complications included glaucoma, nystagmus, strabismus, retinal detachment and opacification of the posterior capsule. The mean age at the time of surgery was 31. 5 ± 23. 3 days. The average follow-up after surgery was 2. 85 ± 1. 9 years old.
On 14 eyes there were persistent fetal vessels (persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous body). Glaucoma developed in 12 children (22%), nystagmus was detected in 18 children (33%), strabismus in 28 (52%), opacification of the posterior capsule in 7 (13%). The development of glaucoma prevailed in children operated on at the time of 13.5 - 43 days of life, nystagmus - at a time 48 - 84 days of life, strabismus - 55.5 - 84 days, secondary cataracts - 26.5 - 40 days.
