In order to comply with the norms of air pollution with nitrogen dioxide from February 2019, the entry of cars corresponding to the ecological standard "Euro-4" and below is banned, the decision of the administrative court in Wiesbaden, adopted on Wednesday, September 5. "The ban is necessary, since all other measures considered by the authorities as alternative do not lead to a reduction in the level of air pollution within a reasonable time," said Justice Rolf Hartman.
The court decision affects a quarter of cars registered in Frankfurt, as well as an undefined number of cars, whose owners live outside the city and come to work for it. According to statistics, Frankfurt is in the first place in Germany by their number: 310,000 people come to work every day in the city with a population of 660 thousand.
According to the plan to maintain air purity, operating in the federal state of Hesse, since September 2019 in cities, the use of Euro-5 ecological standards machinery may be banned,.
Since 2010 in Germany, the maximum content of nitrogen dioxide in the air is set at 40 micrograms per cubic meter. In Frankfurt, the average is now 50 micrograms.
Claims against the authorities of Frankfurt, as well as another 28 cities in Germany in various courts filed an environmental organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe. In October, claims will be heard against Berlin and Mainz, in November - Bonn and Cologne.
