The Type 001A aircraft carrier, the first ship of this type, fully designed and built in China, successfully passed the sea trials. This, according to People's Daily Online, said the chairman of the board of the Chinese Corporation of Heavy Shipbuilding (CSIC), Hu Wenming. According to him, the ship has completely passed all planned checks.

After mooring tests, the ship is handed over to sea trials. In this case, he goes to sea, where specialists check how his on-board equipment works in real conditions, whether the ship meets the design specifications, including speed, stability and fluidity.

The Type 001A aircraft carrier, previously named "Shandong", went to sea for trial trials on April 23, 2018, and on May 13 it began testing itself. Experts checked the work of propulsion system and communication system.

Designing of an aircraft carrier Type 001A has been carried out since 2013. Most likely during the design, the Chinese specialists took as their basis the Soviet design of aircraft-carrying cruisers 1143. 6 Krechet. It is believed that the design documentation for these ships China purchased from Ukraine in the 1990s together with the unfinished aircraft carrier "Varyag".

The latter was first planned to be rebuilt in a casino, but later the Chinese authorities decided to finish building a ship. He received the name "Liaoning" and in 2012, as a training ship of deck aviation was included in the Chinese fleet.

The construction of the Type 001A aircraft carrier was carried out from 2015. The ship received an elongated and higher "island" (the superstructure on the deck of the aircraft carrier) compared with such a design in "Liaoning".

In addition to the Type 001A ship in Dalian, the construction of the Type 002A aircraft carrier. This aircraft carrier was designed completely from scratch by Chinese experts.
